Heading to Malta for an RYA sailing course? Here’s exactly what to pack — from deck shoes to sun protection — for a comfortable and successful week on the water.

    Starting Your Sailing Journey

Your first RYA sailing course is a big step — exciting, slightly unfamiliar, and full of new challenges. Whether you’re joining as a Competent Crew or stepping into the Day Skipper role, there’s a lot to take in. One thing you shouldn’t worry about? What to wear.

Knowing what to pack can help you feel confident, prepared, and comfortable from day one. Luckily, Malta’s Mediterranean climate makes dressing for a sailing course relatively straightforward — as long as you plan for sun, wind, and the occasional cool evening at sea.

The Climate in Malta: What to Expect

Situated in the central Mediterranean, Malta offers ideal sailing weather for most of the year. From May through October, average daytime temperatures range from 24°C to 33°C, with warm breezes and very little rain. Nights are generally mild, though temperatures can drop slightly at sea — especially in early spring or late autumn.

During winter months (December to February), Malta is cooler but still milder than northern Europe, with average highs of 15–18°C and occasional strong winds — great for mile building or more advanced courses like Yachtmaster Prep.

    What to Pack: Clothing Essentials

Here’s what we recommend for a 5-day RYA practical course in Malta, whether you're living aboard or staying ashore.

     On-the-Water Clothing

    • Breathable, lightweight shirts (short and long sleeve) – for sun protection and layering
    • Quick-drying shorts/trousers – avoid cotton; go for technical fabrics or lightweight synthetics
    • Swimwear – for the occasional dip at anchor
    • Soft-soled, non-marking shoes or deck shoes – essential for safety and grip on deck
    • Light jumper or fleece – evenings can get chilly, especially on night sails
    • Waterproof jacket – optional but smart in shoulder seasons or during offshore trips

    🌞 Sun Protection

    • Sun hat or cap – with a strap (it’s windy!)
    • UV sunglasses – polarized lenses highly recommended
    • SPF 30+ sunscreen – the Mediterranean sun is intense, even on cloudy days
    • Lip balm with SPF – often forgotten but very useful at sea

    🧳 Other Useful Items

    • Changes of underwear and lightweight clothing
    • Microfibre towel – dries quickly and saves space
    • Wash bag & personal toiletries
    • Small pack of wet wipes – very handy between showers
    • Ear plugs – boat cabins can be cozy, and snoring happens!
    • Sea sickness remedy – if you’re prone, come prepared
    • Soft duffel bag or backpack (max 60L) – suitcases don’t fit well on yachts

👓 If You Wear Glasses or Contacts

    • Bring spares! Salt spray and wind can be unkind to lenses. A sports strap is also useful to avoid losing them overboard.

    Winter Sailing? Add This:

If you're attending an RYA course in Malta from November to March, add:

    • Light thermal base layer
    • Waterproof sailing jacket and trousers (some schools may lend these)
    • Sailing boots or waterproof trainers
    • Warmer fleece or insulated midlayer

    Final Tips for Packing

    • Pack light — cabin space on yachts is limited, and you’ll use fewer clothes than you think
    • Avoid jeans — they stay wet and salty
    • Choose synthetic or merino wool layers — they dry quickly, resist odours, and don’t need ironing
    • Don’t forget shore wear — comfy clothes for exploring Malta’s harbours, villages, or restaurants after a day of sailing

Get Ready for Your Sailing Adventure

Your RYA sailing school experience in Malta will be a mix of learning, adventure, and Mediterranean magic. With the right clothing and gear, you’ll be free to focus on navigating, helming, anchoring — and enjoying the sea.
