Planning a yacht charter around Malta’s stunning coastline is one of the most unforgettable ways to experience the islands. Whether you’re island-hopping from Valletta to Gozo or anchoring in a secluded Blue Lagoon cove, it’s important to know what’s included in your charter—and what’s not.
Here’s what you can usually expect, and what to check for when booking your sailing holiday in Malta:
⛵ 1. Safety Equipment – A Must-Have
All Maltese-flagged charter boats should comply with local maritime safety regulations, including:
• Life jackets and life raft
• Fire extinguishers and flares
• VHF radio
• First aid kit
• Emergency signaling gear
Ask your charter provider to confirm the boat is fully equipped and inspected for safety. This isn’t optional—it’s essential.
🌊 2. Fuel, Gas, and Water
Most Maltese charters provide the boat with full fuel and water tanks, plus a full gas cylinder for the stove.
You’ll often be expected to refill fuel before returning the boat, or the charter company may deduct it from your deposit. Ask upfront how fuel charges are handled to avoid surprises.
🛠 3. Extras – Sometimes Included, Sometimes Not
Charter boats may or may not include items like:
• Bedding and towels
• Bimini or sunshade
• GPS and navigation tools
• Tender and outboard
• Snorkeling gear or paddleboards
Some Maltese charter companies include these as part of the package, while others charge extra. It’s worth confirming in advance to avoid unexpected rental fees.
📍 4. Marina Fees
Unless specified, mooring fees at marinas like Portomaso, Grand Harbour Marina, or Mgarr (Gozo) are usually not included.
If you plan to overnight in marinas during your charter, budget accordingly. Alternatively, anchoring in a quiet bay (Comino, anyone?) can be a free and beautiful option—weather permitting.
⚓ 5. Insurance & Security Deposit
Most charters in Malta will require:
• A security deposit, refundable if the yacht is returned undamaged
• Or a non-refundable damage waiver to reduce or replace the deposit
Also consider travel insurance and optional skipper’s liability insurance—especially if you’re chartering with friends or handling the yacht yourself.
☀ Bonus: Sunshine & Crystal Clear Water
With over 300 sunny days a year, Malta is a sailor’s paradise. The weather is ideal, the distances are short, and the water is famously clear. Chartering here means you can swim, sail, and relax in some of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful spots—without needing to venture far from port.
