Preparing for the RYA Yachtmaster Exam
⛵ 1. Understand the Exam Requirements Thoroughly
Before booking your exam, make sure you meet the strict requirements:
✔ Minimum sea time – 50 days, 2,500 nautical miles, including night hours and several passages of 60+ miles.
✔ Skipper experience – At least 5 days as skipper, including passages involving overnight sailing.
✔ Required knowledge – Chart work, pilotage, meteorology, navigation, collision regulations, and boat handling under sail and power.
Familiarize yourself with the RYA Yachtmaster syllabus and ensure your logged sea miles and experience align with the official requirements.
🌊 2. Gain Real Sailing Experience in Mediterranean Waters
The Mediterranean offers excellent conditions for building the required miles and skills. A Malta sailing experience or Malta-Sicily sailing adventure provides diverse conditions, including coastal passages, night sailing, and tidal navigation—valuable experience for your exam.
✔ RYA-approved sailing courses – Participating in a sailing charter Malta or joining an RYA-approved sailing course Med can add focused practice and expert coaching.
📍 3. Prepare for the Oral and Practical Exam Separately
The Yachtmaster exam has two main components:
✔ Oral exam – Be prepared to answer questions on tides, weather, navigation, and emergency procedures. Review pilot books and almanacs regularly.
✔ Practical exam – You will be assessed on boat handling, passage planning, anchor work, man overboard drills, and leadership skills.
Practice mock exams with instructors at an RYA sailing school or with experienced skippers to gain confidence in both areas.
🛠 4. Master Passage Planning and Navigation
A critical part of your exam is effective passage planning. Plan routes meticulously, considering tides, weather, hazards, and alternative anchorages. Being able to quickly adapt your plan during the exam shows your ability as a competent skipper.
Use pilot charts, tide tables, and weather forecasts like those from Predict Wind or local Mediterranean sources.
🏆 5. Focus on Leadership and Crew Management
Your examiners will evaluate your ability to lead and manage your crew safely and effectively. Practice clear communication, delegation, and maintaining calm during challenging situations.
✔ Consider taking a Competent Crew course or additional leadership training to build these skills before attempting your Yachtmaster exam.
⚓ 6. Keep Your Logs and Documentation Up to Date
Ensure your logbook is detailed, accurate, and up-to-date. Include all passages, crew roles, and weather conditions. Your logbook is proof of your experience and will be scrutinized during your exam.
