Preparing for the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course

⛵ 1. Ensure Minimum Sailing Experience

If you’re aiming to complete the RYA Day Skipper practical course, it’s essential to arrive with some sailing experience already under your belt. Candidates are required to have logged at least 5 days and 100 nautical miles of sailing, including 4 hours of night sailing, before starting the course. This baseline experience ensures you’re ready to fully benefit from the practical training.

🌊 2. Take the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course First

While the practical course focuses on hands-on skills, the RYA Day Skipper Theory course covers crucial knowledge like navigation, meteorology, and chartwork. Most candidates find it invaluable to complete the theory portion ahead of the practical training. The practical syllabus is quite demanding, and trying to learn theory and practice simultaneously in just five days can be overwhelming.

Day Skipper Fastrack Option – Many sailing schools in Malta and the Mediterranean offer a 9-day course, combining theory and practical modules to accelerate your progress.

📍 3. Refresh Your Knowledge Beforehand

If you completed the theory course some time ago, it’s a good idea to review the Day Skipper Theory and Practical Course Notes books before the practical sessions. Brushing up on these materials will help you feel more confident and prepared.

🛠 4. Gain Additional Experience with Dinghy Sailing or Sailing Adventures

For novice sailors or those with limited time on the water, spending a day or two sailing a dinghy can be a great way to develop your wind awareness and boat handling skills. These subtle skills are crucial for passing the Day Skipper practical exam and safely managing your own vessel.

Malta Sailing Adventures – Joining a Malta sailing adventure or other Mediterranean cruising trips can build your sea time and boost your confidence before attending the course.
