Using your inflatable tender safely allows you more freedom and access while keeping everyone secure. These tips also form part of the RYA Competent Crew course training.
⚑ 1. Secure Your Tender When Inflating
Always tie your tender securely to your yacht or the shore before inflating. A sudden gust of wind can easily blow it away, costing you more than just pride.
📤 2. Stow Essential Items Onboard
Before you get in, make sure your tender carries the necessary equipment:
• Oars or paddles
• Dinghy pump
• Engine (if fitted) with a dead man’s switch
• Fuel for the engine
• Bright white torch (for visibility)
• Handheld VHF radio (fully charged)
• Flare pack (optional but recommended)
• Mobile phone (charged and preferably waterproofed)
Also consider bringing a lock for the engine and a bag to keep all accessories tidy.
👥 3. Inform Someone of Your Plans
Make sure someone aboard the yacht knows where you are going, your estimated return time, and has a way to communicate with you in case of emergency.
🚶 4. Always Wear a Lifejacket
No exceptions—lifejackets save lives. Ensure everyone onboard the tender is wearing one.
👛 5. Dress Appropriately
Wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring a jacket in case conditions change suddenly.
⚓ 6. Safe Boarding Procedure
Board the tender carefully by sitting on the pontoon or yacht’s transom, placing your feet in the tender, and sliding yourself in low and steady. The heaviest person should board first to keep the tender stable.
🛠 7. Prepare the Engine or Oars Before Casting Off
Start your engine before you cast off, or have your oars ready if rowing.
📍 8. Be Mindful of Conditions
Always consider wind, tide, and current when leaving and returning. These can significantly affect your journey.
👁 9. Visibility at Night
If using your tender after dark, carry a bright torch or light to make sure other vessels can see you.
🌊 10. Plan Responsible Use
If you’re returning from a social outing, designate a sober driver for the tender, and ensure everyone is aware of safety rules and wears lifejackets.
