Recovering a man overboard (MOB) under engine power is the most common and practical method for most sailors. Maneuvering a yacht precisely with the engine allows you to stop quickly or even reverse if needed—giving you better control and increasing the chances of a safe and efficient rescue.
⛵ Initial Steps Before Starting Your Engine Recovery
Before firing up the engine, it’s critical to check the water for any loose lines or debris that could get caught in the propeller or damage the engine. This step is essential to avoid complications during the recovery.
If you haven’t already, bring the yacht to a stop and heave to near the casualty to stabilize your position.
⚓ Sail Handling During Engine Recovery
While preparing to maneuver under power:
• Lower or furl the headsail to avoid interference. If your yacht has a furling headsail, carefully furl it while maintaining control of the sheets and furling lines.
• Keep the mainsail centered and controlled. If your crew is limited, furling the mainsail might help, but many skippers prefer to keep the mainsail up as a backup in case the engine fails.
• Be mindful of any upcoming gybes during the maneuver—communicate clearly with your crew and execute controlled gybes to maintain safety.
🚤 Approaching the Casualty Under Power
When approaching the MOB:
• Aim to come head-to-wind, positioning the casualty about half a boat length off to one side. This avoids the dangerous bow area, which can rise and fall unpredictably in waves.
• As the casualty aligns with the yacht’s shrouds, stop the boat.
• If needed, make a slight turn to present your beam to the casualty and drift downwind gently. Remember to ease the mainsheet and dump the vang to depower the mainsail and reduce boat speed.
⛵ Alternative Approach: Sailing Close to the Casualty
Another strategy is to approach under sail on a fine reach. Though it requires more setup and a longer distance to maneuver, this method lets you continue your approach even if the engine fails unexpectedly.
🛠️ Practice and Preparation Are Key
Whether under sail or power, keeping constant visual contact with the casualty is vital. The actual rescue will often take longer than the approach, so regular practice of your man overboard drills and a clear, practiced plan for recovering the person aboard are essential for safety.
