The definition of a “qualified skipper” varies. Some experienced sailors may lack formal paperwork but have plenty of sea time, while others hold certificates but less practical experience.

✔ The waters you intend to sail in – each country’s territorial rules

✔ The charter company and insurers’ requirements

📜 The International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

In most of Western Europe, the ICC is considered the standard proof of competence. It’s an internationally recognised licence issued under UNECE Resolution 40 by authorised bodies like the RYA.
