Find out how long RYA sailing certificates remain valid, which require renewal, and what’s needed for revalidation or commercial endorsements.
Most RYA sailing certificates—from Competent Crew up to Yachtmaster Ocean—are valid for life once awarded. You do not need to renew them as long as you met the required standard when earning the certificate.
📝 Certificates That Require Renewal
Some certificates do require periodic revalidation, especially if you work commercially:
✔ RYA Sea Survival Certificate and First Aid at Sea Certificate (or equivalent) are mandatory for commercial endorsements.
✔ First Aid Certificate must be renewed every 3 years.
✔ Commercial endorsements require revalidation every 5 years, proving ongoing work in the industry and fitness via a valid medical certificate (usually ML5 or ENG1). Medicals generally expire every 2 to 5 years.
🌎 International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
The ICC, required for most European coastal yacht charters, must be renewed every 5 years.
If you hold an RYA certificate, renewal is mostly administrative: you provide proof of qualifications, a photo, and pay a fee.
📚 Instructor Certifications
✔ RYA Yachtmaster Instructor and Cruising Instructor certificates must be renewed every 5 years.
✔ Renewal involves a two-day on-water assessment with an RYA examiner.
✔ For shore-based teaching, you must hold either a Yachtmaster Instructor or the RYA Day Skipper Theory Teaching Certificate.
🚢 Final Thoughts: Stay Current & Confident
Knowing your certificate’s validity helps you stay prepared whether sailing recreationally in Malta or working professionally. Always check requirements if you plan to sail commercially or teach.
